Gillingham manager Martin Allen has told KSN he would still like to sign up to five players ahead of the new season.

Speaking after the 3-2 win over Ebbsfleet United at Stonebridge Road on Saturday afternoon, Allen conceded that despite seeing his side progress week on week, he’d still like to make signings in the next few weeks:

“There are places up for grabs and we are hoping in the next couple of weeks to sign some players and there was a trialist in today so we are hoping to bring in three players, maybe four, maybe five.”

“We will have to see how the finances are with the Chairman and see what we can do.”

“Hopefully we’ll be having those meetings Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.”

Thus far, Allen has signed striker Ben Strevens, midfielder Charlie Allen and goalkeepers Stuart Nelson and Tommy Forecast, but given the chance, the Gillingham manager admitted he would be keen to add to the squad, and especially look to strengthen his starting eleven:

“The ones we are looking at, we want them to come in and be straight in the starting eleven. I want decent players because we’ve got a decent squad, we have some good young players behind this little group.”

“If we don’t get them, we get on with what we have got, if we do get them, we’ll also get on with what we’ve got.”

“There with no moaning and no whinging but we’ll see what Andy, the Chairman and myself can come up with next week.”

Gillingham have been linked with a variety of names in the past couple of weeks, but Allen wouldn’t be drawn on naming names of any of his potential targets.
